Does Your HVAC System Have Duct Leaks?

duct-repair

Your HVAC system is more than the air conditioner and heater. It also includes the ductwork that transports air to and from the heating and cooling system, circulating air through the rooms of the house. It’s easy to take this ductwork for granted because most of it remains out of sight. But if the ducts have leaks and gapping, they can create major problems for your home, including wasted energy, reduced comfort, and even poor indoor air quality.

How can you tell you have duct leaks? Our Peaden Pros offer duct services in Tallahassee, FL, so they can explain the signs to watch for…

Warning Signs of Duct Leaks

  • Higher than usual energy bills: If your energy bills have unexpectedly spiked, it could be due to your HVAC system working overtime to compensate for lost air. Air leaks in ducts can account for a loss of up to 30% of the air moving through them, so this increase in utility bills can be substantial—and it’s one of the reasons you want the problem stopped.
  • Uneven heating or cooling: Noticeably hot or cold spots in different areas of your home can indicate that air isn’t being distributed properly due to leaks.
  • Poor air quality: If you’re experiencing more dust and pollutants inside your home, leaky ducts might be pulling in dirty air from unconditioned spaces.
  • Change in humidity: Poor air circulation in a home will often cause humidity levels to rise. Damp outside air getting into the duct can also contribute to a house becoming more humid.
  • Unusual noises: Whistling or hissing sounds coming from your ductwork can be a sign that air is escaping through gaps or holes. You might also hear rattling from the ducts because of loose sections.
  • Visible damage: If you can access parts of your ductwork and notice visible damage such as holes or disconnected sections, leaks are almost certainly present.

Dealing With Duct leaks

If you think you have duct leaks, what’s the next step? We can tell with 100% certainty that it isn’t getting out duct tape to attempt to seal those leaks yourself. You won’t be able to pinpoint the leak locations, and you’ll also have trouble accessing them. Plus, duct tape isn’t even designed for ductwork, despite its name, and will fail after only a few months.

The actual next step is to contact our Peaden Pros to schedule duct testing. Our team will hook up a pressure vacuum to your HVAC system and seal off the ductwork so we can test how well the ducts retain air pressure. If you’ve got air leaks, we’ll soon know.

If you do have leaky ductwork, we’ll use special duct sealing techniques to make your ventilation system airtight once more and restore your HVAC system to peak condition. We seal ducts using processes such as applying mastic sealant and special metallic tapes. These offer long-term solutions to duct leaks that won’t fade after only a few months.
